Heartstopper Forever

*Heartstopper* is one of the most important queer cultural phenomena of its generation. Encompassing a comic, a television series and several novellas, it helped bring stories of queer joy to a vast mainstream audience. Some have criticised the show for being overly twee, describing its portrayal of young queer life as "unrealistic", but I've never agreed with that. It's optimistic, for sure, but that doesn't necessarily mean unrealistic. It shows the power of love, communication, honesty and tolerance in a world where, sadly, those qualities are becoming scarcer by the minute. If we all took a leaf out of Nick and Charlie's book, the world would be a much better place. After 24 episodes, the television series concludes with a feature-length 25th instalment. Coming a little over two weeks after the final volume of its graphic novel source material was released, it certainly had its work cut out for it. Compressing the story into two hours, when each season of the series averaged just under four and a half hours, was always going to require compromise. These compromises are noticeable, but they never broke the film's emotional hold over me. In the film, Nick and Charlie face some of the biggest challenges in their relationship yet. We see Charlie, still recovering from self-harm and anorexia, trying to support his doting boyfriend but struggling to break through the surface of Nick's complex anxieties. Nick, on the other hand, experiences something of an identity crisis, crippled by anxiety and unable to visualise life apart from Charlie as he prepares to go off to university. As the story progresses, their relationship becomes more fraught, the stakes rise, and they begin to question whether their teenage love can survive their impending adulthood. That's a hell of a lot for one film to take on. And, indeed, there are moments where the pacing could have done with some more finesse. The film spans an entire school year, and as Nick and Charlie's relationship begins to waver, some developments lack the buildup needed to convey fully what is happening beneath the surface. There are emotional transitions that may consequently feel abrupt, particularly to viewers unfamiliar with the source material. The shorter runtime also means that the supporting characters do not have all the space they richly deserve to develop and shine as they once did. While the comics focused almost exclusively on Nick and Charlie, the TV series had room to expand *Heartstopper*'s world and let its secondary characters breathe. Here, they each get a satisfying conclusion, but their reduced roles are an unavoidable compromise that a full fourth season would not have required. With all that said, the film gets so much more right than it gets wrong. Kit Connor and Joe Locke both break your heart and warm it with equal measure, as they delicately balance the difficult material without resorting to melodrama. The strength of their performances lies, as it always has, in their undeniable chemistry and their sensitivity to the issues explored by Alice Oseman's wonderful script. Connor is particularly impressive in allowing Nick to become frightened, withdrawn and occasionally unfair without ever making him feel unrecognisable. The film challenges the comforting idea that Nick is a perfect boyfriend, revealing instead a young man whose devotion to Charlie cannot protect him from his own uncertainty. The rest of the cast, particularly Jenny Walser, William Gao and Yasmin Finney, deliver performances that are funny, moving and meaningful. Finney is especially powerful during Elle's impassioned plea for Charlie to set aside his heartbreak long enough to stand beside her at Pride, as she reminds him of the prejudice and injustice she faces while simply trying to live her life. Tao and Elle's tender "last dance", meanwhile, provides one of the film's most bittersweet farewells. Although the supporting characters have less room than they would have enjoyed across a full season, moments like these ensure that their stories still carry genuine emotional weight. While it was always going to be somewhat jarring to see Anna Maxwell Martin step into Olivia Colman's shoes as Nick's mum, she plays the role beautifully. Sarah's heart-to-heart with Nick is one of the film's strongest scenes, as she reassures him that his relationship is not necessarily doomed while drawing upon the mistakes she made with his father. Her advice is compassionate without offering easy answers, perfectly reflecting the film's more mature understanding of love. *Forever* also stays true to the fundamental tone that made the show such a success. It maintains its dazzling, colourful cinematography, complete with animated doodles that hark back to the story's graphic-novel origins. As the characters grow older, sexual intimacy takes on a more prominent role. Compared with the more explicit approach of shows such as *Sex Education* and *Heated Rivalry*, the film handles sex with tenderness and restraint. The heat and emotion remain palpable, however, and the scenes are never merely decorative: they explore Nick and Charlie's deepening intimacy and their growing emotional and physical maturity. Their final sex scene, in which they profess their love for one another, is especially beautiful in its intimacy and emotional honesty. More than anything, *Heartstopper Forever* affected me on an intensely emotional level. Perhaps the most devastating moment comes when Charlie concludes that his relationship may be over while a recovery app quietly congratulates him on the time since his last act of self-harm. The contrast between Charlie's measurable progress and the devastation Locke conveys in that moment broke me. Yet the film's sadness never feels manipulative or unearned. It rests upon how deeply we have come to care for these characters and how gracefully the story has allowed them to grow. While not entirely free from the compromises of its format, *Heartstopper Forever* is a fitting, profoundly moving conclusion to this chapter of Nick and Charlie's lives. It honours the warmth and optimism that made the series beloved while allowing its characters and relationships to become more complicated, more mature and more human. I cried through much of it, but I also came away feeling hopeful, fulfilled and deeply grateful that these characters were given such a beautiful farewell.
