**Score: 10/10 An Unassuming, Ahead of Its Time Masterpiece** This movie is an unassuming masterpiece and is so far ahead of its time. If you have seen *Strange Days*, the premise is basically the same a machine that records and plays back the sensory experiences and emotions of others. But *Brainstorm* came out first and is, in many respects, a better movie. I love both *Strange Days* and *Brainstorm*. Both are classics! The type of movies that never grow old or go out of date. Directed by special effects legend Douglas Trumbull (\*2001: A Space Odyssey\*, *Blade Runner*), *Brainstorm* is a film that rewards patience and attention. Its ideas are as relevant today as they were in 1983, and its technical ambitions while compromised by the era still dazzle. **The Premise: Prophetic and Philosophical** The story follows Dr. Michael Brace (Christopher Walken) and his colleague Dr. Lillian Reynolds (Louise Fletcher), who have developed a revolutionary device a "Triad" helmet capable of recording and transferring sensory experiences, emotions, and even dreams from one mind to another. What begins as a tool for entertainment and communication quickly spirals when the military industrial complex takes an interest in its darker applications: brainwashing and torture. Meanwhile, Brace becomes obsessed with a recording of Lillian's fatal heart attack, determined to experience the "scariest thing any of us will ever face" death itself, and what might lie beyond. It's a richly layered narrative, unfolding layer by uncomfortable layer. The film brilliantly shows the evolution of the memory recording helmet, not by weighing you down with technical explanations, but simply by showing you a smaller version of it each time you see it. It's a visual shorthand that respects the audience's intelligence. **The Visual Mastery** Trumbull's background in special effects is on full display. The film is visually stunning, especially the 70mm sequences that depict the "recorded" experiences. Even if the "real world" scenes are shot in a boxed in 35mm ratio that can feel disorienting on modern TVs, it was an intentional, immersive choice that emphasised the contrast between the mundane and the transcendent. **Comparisons to *Strange Days*** The comparison to *Strange Days* is inevitable, and the films are soulmates. *Brainstorm* is less dark and violent, with a more optimistic and spiritual conclusion. It's the "prequel" to the technological dystopia of *Strange Days* a film about the pioneers who created the "SQUID" technology, wrestling with its implications before it became a tool of the black market. Both explore the same concept, but *Brainstorm* does so with a more metaphysical, humanist lens. **Why a 10/10?** This film is a 10/10 because it achieves something rare: it makes you *think*. It's a cerebral, emotional, and visually poetic journey that culminates in one of the most unforgettable, transcendent depictions of the afterlife ever put to film. The final sequence is a breathtaking vision of cosmic unity, a departure from the materialist cynicism of the genre. It earns its place among the greats, and it will never grow old. **Watch if:** You love cerebral sci fi, philosophical thrillers, or films about consciousness and technology. If you're a fan of *Strange Days*, you owe it to yourself to see this one. **Skip if:** You require fast paced action or standard Hollywood formulas. This is a slow burn that rewards patience.
